Three Crowns

From social networking, digital entertainment, e-commerce to the increasing use of digital assets, the digital economy has undergone rapid growth in the past decade, only accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic.  This has given rise to new opportunities and attendant challenges operating in uncharted waters or nascent regulatory landscapes. Unplug momentarily with coffee and breakfast at an in-person panel featuring the ICDR-AAA, dispute practitioners and in-house counsel as they discuss trends, challenges and disputes in the digital economy. From digital assets, development and licensing, data privacy and protection, to impact of government regulations on business to business interactions, this event promises to be a treat for those interested in the intersection of technology and dispute resolution.

Luke SOBOTA

Partner, Three Crowns, Washington, DC

Luke is a founding partner of Three Crowns. His practice is dedicated to commercial, investor-state, and inter-state arbitration, and he has extensive experience in the technology, energy and financial sectors. He also has more than 25 years of experience litigating international issues in U.S. courts. A Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School and an adjunct professor at the University of Miami, Luke is the co-author of International Arbitration: Three Salient Problems (Cambridge 2020) and General Principles of Law and International Due Process (Oxford 2017). Luke is a member of the board of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) and is Vice President of the Institute for Transnational Arbitration (ITA)’s Executive Committee.  He previously served as a law clerk to the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court and worked at the U.S. Department of Justice.

Smrithi RAMESH

Senior Manager, APJC Outreach, Public Policy, Cloudflare

Smrithi Ramesh is part of the public policy team at Cloudflare, a web performance and cybersecurity company. She leads outreach efforts with law enforcement and other agencies for Asia Pacific Japan and China for Cloudflare as well as part of the team that manages engagement with APAC governments on tech policy issues. A lawyer by education, she monitors various regulations, engages with government agencies, law enforcement and other stakeholders with a practical understanding of the legislative process in the region. Prior to Cloudflare, she worked with various international organizations including ICDR focussed on dispute resolution and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms including domain name dispute resolution in the Asia Pacific region.

Lijun CHUI

Partner, Simmons & Simmons, Singapore

Lijun specialises in tech disputes and investigations, with more than 20 years’ experience in international arbitration and litigation.

 

Her practice spans litigation and arbitration (typically pursuing complex claims), alongside proactive risk management and governance advice to prevent disputes. She is also a go-to advisor for clients in tech-related crises and managing data breaches.

 

Lijun believes that it is important to combine legal proficiency with a practical approach to secure the best commercial outcome. Effective and strategic use of dispute resolution processes can significantly reduce an organisation's business risks. Early and careful management of an investigation can minimise regulatory risks.

 

She previously spearheaded the Singapore Tech Dispute & Regulatory practice at a Magic Circle firm and developed it to a sizeable practice, ranging from tech disputes and investigations to advising on cyber crisis handling and data privacy. She has been recognized in Legal 500 for her litigation and TMT work. Clients have described Lijun as a “standout partner” who is “very knowledgeable in her area of expertise”. She has also been noted for her “creative approach to problem solving”.

 

Beyond her role as counsel, Lijun regularly acts as arbitrator and mediator. She is admitted in Singapore and England and Wales.

Byron KARUPPIAH

General Counsel, Ahrefs

Byron Karuppiah is the General Counsel at Ahrefs, and has been instrumental in the ongoing transformation of the company from a startup into a mature business. Actively involved in the strategic evolution of the company, Byron has implemented a comprehensive approach to legal strategy, he has put in place the legal framework essential for building Ahrefs' Enterprise sales and data protection regime. Byron is also extensively involved strategically in Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence matters, including the development of Ahrefs’ Large Language Model. On the ground, Byron has led negotiations for critical infrastructure, including those for colocation services and other significant deals.

 

Prior to Ahrefs, Byron was involved in Investor State Arbitration, the negotiation of Free Trade Agreements, and various Digital Economy Agreements. He is also an author of the regulatory landscape report "When Code Creates," and has briefed the Singapore Supreme Court on the intersection of AI and IP. He continues to be interested in the wider intersection of intellectual property and artificial intelligence.

Aastha CHAWLA

Director, Asia, AAA-ICDR

Aastha Chawla, an Indian qualified lawyer, specializes in dispute resolution, boasting extensive experience in providing legal services to a diverse international clientele. As the Director (Asia) for the American Arbitration Association – International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR), Aastha oversees ICDR's case management operations and spearheads business development efforts from the Asia Case Management Centre in Singapore.


Aastha holds a master's degree in International Commercial Arbitration Law from Stockholm University, Sweden, further bolstering her expertise in the field. Prior to her role at ICDR, she contributed her legal acumen to some of India's leading law firms. Notably, she served as a valuable member of the dispute resolution team at Khaitan & Co., India.

Hongchuan ZHANG-KROGMAN

Associate, Three Crowns

Hongchuan Zhang-Krogman is an associate at Three Crowns LLP, based in Washington, DC. She represents sovereigns, their instrumentalities and corporations in commercial and investment treaty arbitrations in various sectors, including technology, telecommunications, energy, mining, and aerospace, and under the major arbitral rules.  Prior to private practice, Hong was a law clerk at the Supreme Court of Singapore and state counsel at the International Affairs Division of the Attorney-General’s Chambers Singapore, where she represented Singapore in international disputes and negotiations and at international fora. She is qualified to practice in New York, Washington, DC and Singapore and currently serves on the board of the International Center of Dispute Resolution (ICDR)’s Y&I group.
