This event explores the critical issues that arbitrators face in modern international arbitration, from the initial engagement and interview stage, to appointment and challenge proceedings. The discussion aims to address these issues from the myriad perspectives of counsel, arbitrators, and arbitral institutions, with a view to identifying emerging trends and best practices.

Moderator

Abraham VERGIS SC
Managing Director, Providence Law Asia
Abraham Vergis is Senior Counsel and the Founder and Managing Director of Providence Law Asia, a boutique practice specialising in international disputes. Equally at home before a trial court, appellate bench or arbitral tribunal, he is sought out for complex, high-stakes matters spanning sovereign-state infrastructure projects, corporate collapses and billion-dollar enforcement actions, as well as fraud investigations, white-collar defence, professional negligence, technology, cryptocurrency and digital assets. An accredited arbitrator and mediator, Abraham is also frequently appointed to resolve complex, high-value disputes involving parties across Asia and beyond.

Dmitry DYAKIN
Partner & Head of DGP Dispute Resolution Practice; Member of the Court of Arbitration, Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC)
Dmitry Dyakin is an internationally recognised dispute resolution expert with vast experience representing Russian and foreign businesses, governments, and state-owned corporations across industries including oil & gas, banking, and construction, among others.
He specialises in handling major cross-border disputes in international courts and in commercial and investment arbitration under the rules of leading arbitration institutions, including SIAC, ICC, LCIA, SCC, LMAA, UNCITRAL, and ICSID.

Matthew BROWN
Deputy Registrar, Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC)
Matthew is a Deputy Registrar of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, where he helps to manage the case administration function in the SIAC Secretariat.
Prior to joining SIAC, Matthew practised international arbitration in the Singapore office of a prominent global law firm. In that role, Matthew acted for clients in a wide variety of high-value and complex international commercial and investment arbitration matters with a particular focus on disputes in South East Asia. He has advised on all aspects of the arbitral process with experience across sectors including energy, infrastructure, finance, media and hospitality.

Dato' Mary LIM
President, AIAC Court of Arbitration
Justice Dato' Mary Lim Thiam Suan, President of the AIAC Court of Arbitration, is a retired judge of the Federal Court of Malaysia. She holds LLB (Hons) and LL.M degrees and is an Honorary Bencher of The Honourable Society of Lincoln's Inn.
She is Adjunct Professor at Taylor's University, Malaysia, and serves on numerous advisory and editorial bodies, including the Special Advisory Committee of the Permanent Forum on China Construction Law (PFCCL), the UNDP Advisory Working Group on Judicial Integrity Network, the Committee for the Reform of Contract Law (Malaysia), and the Editorial Board of the Asia Pacific Regional Arbitration Group (APRAG). She is also a Fellow of the International Academy of Construction Lawyers, Chairperson of the Code Administration Committee (Central Bank), and a member of the Special Task Force to Facilitate Business (PEMUDAH).
Internationally, she serves as a Judge of the Bahrain International Commercial Court and a Judge of the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) Courts.

Dr. Michael HWANG SC
Senior Counsel and Chartered Arbitrator, Michael Hwang Chambers LLC
Michael Hwang, S.C., is a Senior Counsel and internationally recognised arbitrator, with over 50 years of experience in the legal profession and a practice focused on international arbitration and mediation. He was one of Singapore’s first Senior Counsel and previously served as a Judicial Commissioner of the Supreme Court of Singapore and as Chief Justice of the Dubai International Financial Centre Courts. He has held
senior positions with leading international arbitration institutions, including the ICC, ICCA, LCIA, DIAC, and has served on the Users Council of SIAC.

Dr. Pinky ANAND
Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court of India and Judge of the Bahrain International Commercial Court (BICC)
Prof. (Dr.) Pinky Anand is a Judge of the Bahrain International Commercial Court, Senior Advocate, arbitrator, mediator, and author, with over 45 years of practice before India's Supreme Court, High Courts, and tribunals.
She served two terms as Additional Solicitor General of India, has represented India at international forums, and holds degrees from Harvard Law School and Delhi University.
An internationally recognized expert in arbitration and private international law, she has received multiple global honors and advised on key legal reforms, including women's workplace protection and white-collar crime laws.
